Judging the Show: Henry Prikryl
Henry Prikryl grew up a small community in Central Texas, all 12 grades in the same building, two grades in each room, no Library, no art classes, no exposure to art other than the Saturday Evening Post magazine covers which gave him a great appreciation for the work of Norman Rockwell. He was also influenced by a High Schooler, Talmadge Anderson who drew posters for plays and a
Farm and Ranch magazine which had a drawing competition every month. He spent his time drawing on grocery sacks with a number 2 pencil. The first art class he can remember was High School in Dallas, where he made jewelry. So he was self-taught in the art of drawing. He then went into the Armed Forces and attended the original Dallas Art Institute on his return. He was fortunate to have Leona McGill (Who's Who in American Art) as his first mentor. He went on to Commercial Art, working for a large retail firm and becoming the Art Director, and from there started his first Graphics Arts Company (Banana Art Production). He realized that there was much to learn in the production of Graphic Art used in the everyday production, so he went to work with my second mentor, Wayne Daniels, who was a superb Sign painter and Designer. There, Wayne taught Henry the art of Sign Painting, Gold Leaf and an array of other useful things an Artist needs to know. Henry opened his second Graphis Arts/Sign Company (A-Sign Company) which he has operated for the past 50 years. In the early 90's he saw a story in the paper about a group of Artists painting pictures outdoors. He joined up with them the following week and painted with them for several years, with the group adopting the name of The Outdoor Painters Society. He is also an Alumni member of the Portrait Society of America. He has been a member of several Arts Groups including serving as president of Associated Creative Artists. He has taken workshops from many of the top painters in America, learning Ala Prima painting in Landscape, as well as Portraiture. He sometimes hosts workshops in his home Studio. He has done numerous demos for Art groups in and around Dallas County and has won local and regional awards for his paintings. He is happily married to his wife Teri for fifty years and have three wonderful children and two grandsons.
