January 2021

You are invited to attend our first 2021 Monthly Member Meeting

Monday, January 4th - Art on the Square, LLC - at 6pm
113 Franklin Street, Waxahachie, Texas (Downtown Courthouse Square)

DOORS open at 5:45

At 6pm The Mini Show will begin. Artworks must be entered by 6:15 to be considered for an award. Remember that if you are a winner in the show you may not enter again for the following two months! Example: If you win in January you can enter again in April.

At 6:30pm our business meeting will begin. This is an opportunity to meet the new officers and board members for 2021. Also, any questions you may have regarding the upgraded membership plan options can be addressed during this business meeting.

At 7 pm our DEMO ARTIST: Hannah Tyler of the Sly Cat Gallery in Cedar Hill

Hannah is a Cedar Hill based visual artist, earned her B.F.A. degree in studio art from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, in 2014. A large portion of her art work focuses on the delicate balance between life and death and the human aversion to seeing simple but necessary truths.

DRAW ALONG: Bring your own materials to draw or paint. Hannah will be demonstrating capturing 3-D depth on a two dimensional surface using a variety of animal skulls. Just one more opportunity for improvement of what we do.

This is the month to pay your membership dues. In 2021 we begin our new two-tiered membership fees. As an ECAA member annual dues are $40. As a Gallery Partner annual dues are only $20 more, at the annual rate of $60. You can read all about the benefits of each type of membership plan and pay online at “become a member.”

As we continue to observe “Social Distancing” we require everyone to wear a face covering (mask, bandana, etc.) to respect - and help protect -those in attendance who might have health issues. We have plenty of hand sanitizer in stock.

Pop Up Shows in 2021

There are opportunities to show in a three person show on the second Thursday night during downtown Waxahachie Ladies Night Out. The sign-up sheet is on the bulletin board in the classroom. The dates are: January 14th two slots available; February 11th; March 11th; April 8th; May 13th; June 10th; July 8th; August 12th: Sept. 9th; Oct. 14th; Nov. 11th; Dec. 9th.

Your show will be advertised on radio, social media and in the newspaper. You may sign up for two dates and you must be set up the display panels and be at the gallery during that Thursday night.

Continuing Sidewalk Shows: Weekend volunteers may display their artwork on the rolling wire display panels while they are working their shift. We especially need Saturday afternoon volunteers.  If you choose to exhibit your work in the Gallery, you will need to join for 2021 as a Gallery Partner Member.

February 1st DEMO ARTIST: Leah Lawless-Smith

Leah writes, “During the demonstration I'll be showing a painting in three processes of completion. The first beginning stages will be just showing blocking in areas with acrylic paint. The second stage of painting will be adding a watercolor technique with acrylic paint showing layering. And the third stage will be showing different techniques in stenciling. Also during the demonstration I'll be talking about products and cleaning your paint brushes and storing them.” Look for more information about Leah’s work methods in the next newsletter.

Leah has a Bachelors of Fine Art from East Texas State University and attended a Summer in London at King’s College studying art, a Master’s of Science in Art from Texas A&M University-Commerce in sculpture and a teaching certificate from Stephen F. Austin University. She teaches art at Ennis High School and is a member of ECAA.

There is also a suggestion box in the office.

Last, but not least:

A great big thank you to Tina Bohlman, retiring President. She brought the organizations so very far, aided by her trusty sidekicks retiring Treasurer Shawn Davis and retiring Advertising Director Jana Jennings.

The ECAA, having been founded in 1958, has lasted much longer than most art clubs and associations.  (Read our history at the website.) We look forward to all of us joining together to continue this impressive tradition.
